Introduction
The Lab Assistant carries out pre-analytical procedures associated with registration, processing and collection of lab specimens. Uses understanding of laboratory operations to help patients in making use of laboratory services. Complies with all lab and safety policies. Utilizes individual protective equipment (PPE) as required by laboratory policy and regulating firms. Tradition Lab Providers is an integrated lab service. Staff may be appointed to lab facilities at various websites in the system.
Obligations
Report distribution and review
Precise distribution of reports according to procedures at each site.
Evaluation and/or reconciliation of reports as directed by site manager.
Customer Service
Written and spoken communication making use of but not restricted to Fax, telephone and the Laboratory Info System (LIS).
Communication complying with laboratory policies and procedures.
Fixing basic customer service issues or referring appropriately.
Computer System Skills
Usage of the Laboratory Details system and other systems connected to the management of patient orders and payment reconciliation. Consists of patient registration, payment processing, lab order retrieval, and test ordering.
Phlebotomy
Performs venipuncture and capillary collections suitable for the age of the client, professionally and with minimal discomfort in accordance with lab policy.
Specimen identification
Follows all laboratory procedures for appropriate patient recognition and specimen labeling.
Drug Screen Collection
Carries out drug screen (might include BAT testing) precisely, following guidelines and chain of custody exactly as recommended.
Specimen Receiving/ Processing
Follows all treatments connecting to specimen processing.
Communicates appropriate details to healthcare service providers regarding specimen collection.
Flags specimens for rejection.
Dispatches specimens to suitable testing places.
Aliquots, labels, and processes specimens using suitable devices and gadgets, i.e., centrifuges and pipettes.
Stores specimens under suitable environmental conditions using authorized retrieval systems.
Maintains lab equipment and the general look of the department.
Computer System Downtime
Demonstrates understanding of Computer system Downtime Procedures.
Understands, for offered job project, how to manage patient/specimen data when either the Order Communication or Laboratory Information systems are not available for usage.
Regulative Compliance
Follow CAP, CLIA and other accreditation and security guidelines as explained in their respective standards.
Identify and interact issues that might negatively affect patient safety to the manager or supervisor. Participate in federal government or regulatory company inspections, if required.
Training, Education and Safety
Attend department conferences and total training and education activities as appointed by the lab manager.
Participate in all applicable safety training sessions. Know the location and contents of the security handbook. Know the location/use of all relevant safety devices. Follow basic precautions for using personal protective devices as needed.
Take part in training/education activities for brand-new employees and trainees as directed by the lab manager/supervisor.
Certifications
Education:
To satisfy the requirements of laboratory regulations High school diploma or GED will be validated for any staff members worked with on or after May 22,2012 For staff members carrying out waived testing, a copy of the High School diploma or GED should be offered the departmental file.
Experience:
Phlebotomy skills are needed for lab assistants working in places that carry out specimen collection; previous work experience with phlebotomy or the successful conclusion of a phlebotomy training course that included an externship is required.
Knowledge and Skills:
Standard reading and composing abilities.
Keyboard abilities and capability to browse electronic systems relevant to task functions required.
Interpersonal and communication abilities required.Ability to run standard office devices (i.e., telephone, facsimile, photocopier, computer and printer).
Basic Medical terms chosen.
Experience with drug screen specimen collection and standard specimen choice, dealing with, and storage activities, preferred.
Customer service experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist needed for all employees who carry out phlebotomy in the State of Washington (including those who float into the function).
