X-Ray Technician Salary and Requirements

If you are considering taking x-rays for a living you will want to know what the x-ray technician salary and requirements are.  The salary of a technician in x-rays can expect on an average to make about 50,000 dollars a year.  It is nothing for an x-ray technician to receive a salary of 25,000 in the first year alone.  After working a year you will receive a nice raise since you are now a trained x-ray technician.  Some people get paid up to 90,000 dollars a year for this type of work.  They are usually specialists in a particular field in the x-ray profession.  They may do comprehensive tests on patients or they may be in a supervisory position.

You will be required to work with patients and explain to them what the test they are having entails.  If they have questions for the tech, he must be able to answer them as long as it pertains to the procedure they are having done.  Many times an x-ray technician’s salary will be higher if they are great with people.  That means keeping the patient calm during the procedure and making them comfortable.  Besides this an x-ray technician will take the x-rays.  That includes positioning the patient to get the best possible x-ray.

An x-ray takes a picture of the bones of the body.  Just about any part of the body can be x-rayed.  They are needed to check for fractures.  If a more comprehensive picture is needed the x-ray technician might have to do a sonogram or MRI.  These are used for all sorts of body parts and can give the doctor a comprehensive view of the part that has been targeted.

X-ray technicians are in demand and they are expected to stay in demand through the new few years.  With the baby boomers reaching an age where x-rays, mammograms and other procedures are a necessity, the x-ray technician will remain in demand.  Your x-ray technician salary may vary depending on several factors.  One will be your location.  There are some states like Hawaii and Nevada that pay more for this job.  When you finish school you may want to consider moving locations to find a high paying job.  You can also stay where you are, close to home where you will still get paid well and won’t have to move.

Community colleges will carry this course.  You will earn your associate’s degree in two years.  You will want to get certified after finishing school.  Right now there are several states that require certification in order to get your state license.  It is expected that more states will follow suit.  You can get certified through an online course.  Once you are certified you will need to get recertified every other year.  This is a career that will have ongoing education.  As new procedures are developed and the equipment changes or improves, you will have to know how to do the procedures and how to maintain the equipment.  With today’s economy it is nice to know that this is a career that you can rely on.
