Should You Become an X-Ray Technician?

One thing that makes a better x-ray technician is the ability to work well with other people.  As an x-ray tech you will be expected to deal with the public.  When a patient comes in for an x-ray it will be necessary to explain the procedure that is to be done.  Positioning the patient for the best possible picture is also necessary.  When you do well with people it obviously is a plus for this job position.

You will be expected to explain procedures that are being performed to the patient.  You will make certain the best possible exposure is done which means making sure the patient stays still through the test or procedure and positioning the patient correctly.  In some cases specialists will explain the results of the procedure.  This is usually done by a radiologist however.

When an x-ray is taken radiation is used to perform it.  The x-ray tech must make sure to wear an apron that is lined with lead.  Depending on the x-rays taken the patient may also wear one for protection against the radiation.  This is all part of the job description.

Many parts of the human body can be x-rayed.  If an x-ray cannot be taken an MRI or sonogram may be needed.  These are the tasks of specialist x-ray technicians.  There are changes to how tests are done every day.  Maintaining the machines used for all the tests also changes.  To keep up with the changes an x-ray technician is expected to use continuing education.  This ensures the tech always knows what is new in the field of x-rays.

Sometimes you will get a patient who is new to a particular test and may be very nervous about having the test taken.  It is up to the x-ray technician to make the patient feel comfortable with the tests being done.  He may talk to the patient throughout the procedure.  This keeps the patient calm and informed on what is happening.  Lwhen a patient knows what is happening they will feel assured that there is nothing to worry about.

x-ray technicians are in high demand right now and it is expected that the need for this job is going to continue to grow rapidly.  With so many baby boomers reaching the age where these procedures are needed comes the need for more techs.  This is true throughout the country.  Some states may need x-ray technicians more than others.  Perhaps you would like to relocate and try out another state.  You get state licenses from each state you which to work in.  it is getting to the point that most states insist on your having a certificate.  You can get certified through online schools.  You will find that getting a job as an x-ray technician is easier once you are certified.  You will have to get recertified every other year.

Jobs for an x-ray technician pay well.  The average amount received by these techs is 54,000 dollars a year.  If you get a bachelor’s degree or specialize in a certain field you can expect more pay.  You may even be able to make as much as 90,000 dollars a year.
