What is expected of an X-Ray Technician?

If you are considering a job as an x-ray technician you are going to want to be good with people.  You will be dealing with many people every day that you work.  The work entails talking to patients and helping them get positioned for their x-rays.  Although it is not a job requirement to get along well with others it definitely will help you to enjoy your work.

An x-ray technician will run the various equipment used to take x-rays.  He will position the patient correctly in front of the x-ray camera in order to get the best possible shot.  He will explain to the patient what is happening throughout the procedure.  Most x-rays involve making sure that clothing and jewelry do not interfere with the procedure.  It means the x-ray technician must see to it that the clothing and jewelry is removed prior to the procedure.

Depending on the specialty of the x-ray technician, more than just x-rays may be done.  As a tech in this field you may have to do sonograms and MRIs.  All procedures are important to the health of the patient.  Some patients may feel uncomfortable having a certain procedure done.  This is especially true of patients who are having an MRI for the first time.  The x-ray technician will be expected to calm the patient and reassure them that all will be well.  He will explain how the test works and what to expect.  With an MRI the tech will inform them of the noises that are normal during the test.  This will reassure the patient and put them at ease.

Certification for this job is not necessary although more and more states are insisting on certification in order to get a state license.  Once you are certified you will have to keep up the certification by taking tests every two years to get recertified.  You will be expected to carry on your education throughout your employment.  As things change and improve you will have to know how to maintain and apply the new tests and procedures.

It is expected that there is going to be a large increase in the number of jobs available for x-ray technicians.  This is a job that is needed more each day.  The baby boomers have a lot to do with that.  They are reaching an age where such tests as sonograms and mammograms are needed.  This means more positions are available for x-ray technicians.

Most people go to school for two years and get their associate’s degree in x-ray technology.  If they want to get a bachelor’s degree they will have to attend for four years.  Classes for certification will be separate from the regular classes.  Parts of the classes can be done online and in the comfort of your home, but parts will mean attending a school for hands-on learning.  The pay received by x-ray technician on an average is around 50,000 dollars a year.  Some who have a specialty in this profession may get paid as much as 90,000 dollars.  The states which offer the best pay include Massachusetts, Maryland, Hawaii and Nevada.
