Top 10 Qualities of a Veterinary Technician

The following top 10 qualities of a veterinary technician are important skills to have if you are thinking of entering this career field. If you’re thinking about becoming a veterinary technician you should consider whether you have these qualities first:

1. Communication Skills: You need to be able to get along with the veterinarian you’re working for as well as all the pet owners who come into the office, many of whom may be under a great deal of stress. You will need to explain medications and dosages to pet owners, etc.

2. Concern for Animals: This should be relatively obvious – you need to like animals and be concerned for their wellbeing to succeed in this career. You will work with many different kinds of animals, so if you only like dogs but can’t stand cats, for example, this career is probably not for you.

3. Cooperation: It is important that you’re able to work with a team, including having positive interactions with the veterinarian (boss) and other veterinary technicians and office assistants (teammates).

4. Endurance: As a veterinary technician you must be able to work long hours, often on your feet.

5. Kind demeanor: Sometimes pet owners will be stressed out about their sick pets, and you must be a calm voice of reason.

6. Organizational Skills: You will need to be able to do paperwork and other organizational tasks, and you’ll always be juggling many different tasks such as testing samples, dispensing medicines and examining different pets in different rooms.

7. Scientific Abilities: A great deal of lab work goes into a vet tech’s job, including work with X-rays and heart machines, so you need to be comfortable with science.

8. Thick Skin: Veterinary technicians need to be comfortable performing medical procedures such as suturing wounds, which is not for the squeamish.

9. Understanding: Comforting those who are losing a beloved pet takes a lot of understanding.

10. Work Ethic: There will be days when the work seems thankless, and there may be challenges, but you must be able to soldier on – there will be better days too.
