Dialysis Technician – Job Description And Responsibilities

A dialysis technician is a person who works at a medical center and who is responsible with operating dialysis machines for the people with kidney failure. Dialysis technicians are also known as renal dialysis technicians, hemodialysis technicians or nephrology technicians.

It is essential that these technicians, who work normally for hospitals or clinics under registered physicians, perform their duties appropriately. This is because the patients affected by a kidney failure perilously need these machines. Each machine is a replacement; a “man-made-artificial-kidney” which fits in to the natural cycle of the patient’s body and substitutes for the natural kidney’s lost work. The body of the patient has suffered a setback due to the loss of a working organism, so, this makes the vigilance and operational understanding of any dialysis technician, imperative. A dialysis technician must be sharp, must have complete operational knowledge and understanding of the machines used and must be punctual in his delivery of this service to the patients.

The main function of the dialysis machines is to cleanse the patient’s blood. Harmful substances such as creatinine, urea and free water are removed from the patient’s veins. It is the responsibility of a dialysis technician to mentally and physically prepare the patient for the procedure, which normally takes about three and a half to four hours daily, and to check his vital medical signs such as blood pressure and pulse rate. It is also the duty of a technician to keep the patient comfortable and the equipment work smoothly, before, during and after the operation. They are also responsible for keeping the machines clean and sterilized. Another essential requirement of this job is a high level of interpersonal skills to judge the patient’s condition and fully understand their needs as accurately as possible.

Let me mention one thing here. Since dialysis technicians are dealing with blood all the time, it is highly recommended that they exercise extra caution against infectious diseases such as Hepatitis and AIDS.

A renal dialysis technician’s salary depends on his experience but the average salary range is between twenty to thirty-five thousand dollars.
