Education & Training to Become an Automotive Technician

 

Finding the right vocational training or career training is the first step in becoming an automotive technician. There are hundreds of programs, certifications, degrees & standards offered by dozens of schools & programs. The hard part in training is to find the best automotive schools that offer the proper certification for your needs.

A proper training program can take over a year to complete and in the end, the graduate will be awarded a certificate. If the graduate has taken the course at a community college, there’s a chance this will be labeled as an associate degree. These typically take two years to complete & often involve other classes that may seem unrelated to a vocational school program. For that very reason, a community college may not be the right place to go if you’re looking to earn a certificate and time is a constraint.

A huge benefit of vocational career training compared to earning a bachelor’s degree is that there is usually a few rounds of hands on training. Actually being an apprentice for a few weeks at a time at a certified garage is part of the training steps in several programs. There’s no better way to learn how to be hands on with a vehicle than to actually work on one with supervised instruction.

While older cars can take up a majority of the maintenance an automotive technician would perform, it’s very common to be sent to manufacturer training sessions in order to learn how to fix newer models. Much of this training surrounds hybrid & electric vehicles as they have become more complex in order to suit the needs of a more environmentally conscious consumer. Very similar to going on sabbatical in a traditional job, existing employees may also be sent to these training sessions. Training sessions may be held at a local training center or employees may be sent to a manufacturer in order to learn new techniques, tips & recall information.

In summary, the standard training certification to receive in the auto industry is an ASE certification. This is not mandatory, although in order to move up in a pay scale, many employers recommend receiving certification training in one of 8 auto training areas. Employers benefit from this by having a higher qualified staff on hand to meet the needs of customers. Employees will benefit from this through receiving higher pay, higher education & becoming more marketable when looking to start their own shop or if tough times come along and a shop closes down.
